On Regina Spector

I was a crazy girl

padded walls and cells

no wonder I sometimes can barely move myself out of bed

put these broken toes to the floor

Creaking bones and joints

whisps of lost smoke blowing through this desert body

fumble tumble weeds

and fucking aches and mistakes, blowing blowing

anger eating earth, dirt to mouth

Seeds and demolished dreams, floods and blood

bloody bodies in this desert

I look to a dark orange sky, down at these sun beaten, weather stripped hands

raw, trying to unwrap a piece of dark chocolate

melt on my tongue damn it

sweet, something sweet

dreams as I walk around this desert and the mirages tease me, glimmers and shadows in heavy heavy drenched light, fierce, unforgiving

like these winds whipping my soul, in my mind, gathering wind and frostbite

I’ll vomit ice picks and black, burnt skin

stop the music

the pain

the words.

Your hands.

it’s burning away

don’t they see see

see this desert.

The chocolate drips down my chin

immediately dries, crusting to my lips

so many secrets

stay

die away inside.

Damn dark chocolate.
